I seek to recognize and honor women in India and elsewhere, who are relegated to lower rungs of society, informed by outdated, classist mentalities that exist in cultures across the world. Female depictions that adorn porcelain vessels or canvas in various histories of the world are usually goddesses or women from wealthy families. Women with inherent “status.” Instead I choose to juxtapose portraits of everyday, “ordinary” women with luxurious materials, porcelain and metal leafing; gold, silver, copper. I pay homage to all women who are treated as ‘less than’ either in their own country, or in another, but in reality are just like you and me; equally powerful women within who deserve to be depicted as such.
